Scope, Purpose, Objectives

1.    Scope

The UK has 20 million domestic gas meters and around half a million industrial and commercial gas meters. Most of the UK’s meter manufacturers have manufacturing plants worldwide. The development of new technology to meet customer demands and EU regulations is high on the agenda. Dual fuel meters, the facility for automated meter reading and other forms of ‘smart’ metering will become more common in the future. Many of the major players in this sector are members of SBGI Utility Networks Division Metering Technology Group.

2.    Purpose
As the principal representative body for Metering Technology companies, this group provides the opportunity for members to discuss and influence development of codes of practice and standards and the work of Government, Ofgem, European Bodies and other key organisations

 Representation of members’ interests is ensured through close working relationships with BSI, Government, Ofgem, European Bodies and other key organisations

3.    Objectives
To compile, maintain and implement an action plan - identifying priorities - for tackling issues that impede the development of members businesses

To provide a forum for manufacturers of gas meters and associated equipment to consider matters affecting the manufacture and sale of such products for the domestic,
commercial/ industrial and transportation markets

To initiate and undertake collective action to develop and promote appropriate metering technologies

4.    Main Activities

Regular group meetings to exchange ideas and discuss matters affecting their business

Representatives from other companies or organisations, impacting on the operation of members’ business, are invited to give presentations and answer questions

Members of the group are kept up to date on important developments in the industry relating to technical, safety, regulatory, environmental and commercial issues.

Collaboratively completing specific tasks, as directed by the members, as an ‘expert group’

Circulation by email of specific articles, publications and information, which are relevant to their business
