Scope, Purpose, Objectives

1. Scope

Membership of this group is open to companies involved in the provision of metering services – Manufacturers, Meter Asset Managers (MAMs) (the companies which provide metering services for gas suppliers, transporters and users) etc.

The UK has 20 million domestic gas meters and around half a million industrial and commercial gas meters.  Most of the UK’s meter manufacturers have manufacturing plants worldwide. The development of new technology to meet customer demands and EU regulations is high on their agendas. Dual fuel meters, the facility for automated meter reading and other forms of ‘smart’ metering will become more common in the future.

2. Purpose

Membership of this group provides the opportunity to contribute to the shaping and development of the market for metering services.

3. Objectives

To provide a forum for metering service providers to consider all matters affecting the provision of their services.

Members of the group are kept up to date on important developments in the industry relating to technical, safety, regulatory, environmental and commercial issues.

Representation of members’ interests is ensured through close working relationships with Government, Ofgem and other key organisations.  Individual members can obtain from the SBGI Secretariat information and advice in response to their specific queries.

4.  Main Activities
Representatives from HSE and Ofgem have attended to give presentations on their views of the competitive market and to discuss major issues about the development of an industry code of practice for MAMs (MAMCoP.)  Members are also given the opportunity to comment on engineering codes of practice and technical issues arising from their day to day activities.

To initiate and undertake collective action to develop and promote a vigorous metering services market.

To keep members informed on all matters relevant to the metering industry as a whole and specifically the sector in which they operate.

To represent any common views of members to third parties e.g. on the formation of codes of practice with Transporters, Suppliers, Shippers, Ofgem, Meter Manufacturers, Meter Asset Owners, IGEM, BSI, HSE and European Bodies and to make recommendations for modifications, enhancement or development, where appropriate, to the existing and proposed codes of practice and legislative framework.
