Mission Statement

To represent and promote the interests of the UK energy and utility networks industry, building on its proud track record of over 100 years service to the onshore gas industry, and provide a range of value-adding services to members.

Vision

To be the trade association of choice for UK energy and utility network companies.

Objectives

  • To provide advocacy and representation for members on safety, commercial, regulatory, technical and environmental matters, and to influence key decision makers in Government, Ofgem and other organisations relevant to their business
  • To keep members informed through targeted information services on all matters relevant to the gas industry as a whole, and the utility networks supply chain in particular
  • To provide networking opportunities through member group meetings, seminars and external events
  • To facilitate international business opportunities and bench-marking through market studies, exhibitions and trade missions

Area of Focus

The Utility Networks Division of SBGI represents the onshore gas industry supply chain in all sectors of network operations from ‘beach-to-meter’.  In addition the organisation is seeking to stretch its representation into areas ‘beyond gas’ lead by its members’ wider business interests in related sectors, for example in utility street works, connections, pipeline equipment, network operations, and utility metering.  The Division’s membership now stands at 102 companies and includes gas distribution network operators, network engineering contractors and equipment providers, metering and metering services companies, and gas storage operators.  Over 50% of member companies have multi-utility business interests and there are a growing number of associates from consultancy groups, systems providers and professional services organisations.

The Division’s key objectives drive the delivery of member services in the following areas:

Advocacy - representing members’ common interests with Government, its departments and agencies, and other industry bodies through lobbying, targeted communications and industry consultation responses.

Information  - weekly industry e-news bulletin (UN Latest News), quarterly magazine (Utility Business), member-only area of web site, briefings and updates and annual review of activities.

Networking – an active programme of member group meetings is complemented by an industry seminar programme, annual Dinner Dance and Awards Lunch.

International Services – targeted market assessment reports, facilitated access to markets and organisation of industry exhibitions.

Events

An active programme of member group meetings is complemented by an industry seminar and events’ programme covering topical issues such as street works, connections, regulation, metering, strategic change, gas industry development, and gas storage.  In broadening the scope of the Division’s interests and appeal, many of these excellent events are undertaken jointly with other representative bodies and professional organisations from across the energy and utilities industry.
