SBGI Sections
When the Society was inaugurated, each member company was associated with one of the eight Sections agreed on 27th February 1906. This principle of Section membership continues to this day in order that members are able to interact with those whose businesses are in similar areas.
The Society has reviewed the Sections throughout its history. Sections have been created, discontinued and merged to meet the needs of that time. It is only possible to give a flavour of this process.
For example, in 1926 the Society formed a new Section XV for Makers of Tubes and Pipes and in 1937 formed two new Sections for Water Heaters and Scientific Instruments.
In 1967, a Section was formed for Natural Gas Conversion Contractors which was later extended to cover all Installation and Servicing companies, before being renamed as the Gas Installation and Service Providers Section.
In 1994/5, a new Section 1 was formed for Gas Suppliers and Shippers but a parallel organisation was formed in the shape of the Gas Forum. The SBGI cooperates actively with the Gas Forum, including the provision of joint conferences. It was decided appropriate therefore to discontinue that SBGI Section.
In 1996, a new Section called the Gas Fire Group was formed as a result of the Decorative Gas Fire Manufacturers Association being absorbed into the SBGI.
